Romans 2:16–22
This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares. Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God; if you know His will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth—then you who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
The gospel of Jesus Christ includes the judgment of God. Whoever believes in Jesus, repents, and obeys will be saved, but those who believe in Jesus yet do not repent will be judged—this is the gospel.
The Jews are God’s people from birth. Therefore, they boast that they are God’s children and take pride in God’s law.
However, their lives violate God’s word, and they do not repent of their sins.
The teachers of the law always taught the people to live righteously according to God’s law.
They believed themselves to be guides for the blind, lights for those in darkness, and teachers who lead people to God.
But in Jesus’ eyes, they had only a formal faith and lived wickedly, so they could not escape the Lord’s judgment.
The Lord rebuked them strongly so that they might repent:
“Why do you teach others but not teach yourselves? You teach people not to commit adultery, yet you lust; you teach not to steal, yet you steal; you who detest idols, why do you covet and rob temple goods?”
The gospel of Jesus teaches that one must believe in Jesus as the only Savior, repent of sin, and obey the Lord’s word to be saved.
However, many Jews received God’s word but resisted His will and did not repent, and thus they were judged.
Even today, countless churches hear the gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ.
Yet most distort the gospel, disobey the Lord, and do not repent, and therefore they are judged and perish like them.
All Christians must obey the teaching of the gospel to be saved.
Jesus’ teaching is: “Repent of your sins, and bear fruit worthy of repentance.”
The gospel of Jesus is: “Believe in Jesus as Savior, forgive and love one another, and whenever you fall short, repent and receive forgiveness.”
However, human doctrines teach that if one confesses Jesus as Savior once, he will go to heaven unconditionally. Because of this, countless Christians fall into corruption, do not repent, and go to hell.
Romans 2:24–29
As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised. So then, if those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised? The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker. A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.
Christians who disobey God’s word cause the holy name of God to be blasphemed among unbelievers.
“How can those who believe in Jesus live like that? It would be better not to believe.”
When Christians hear such words, it results in God’s name being dishonored.
Here, the law does not refer to Old Testament ceremonial laws, but to the command of love given by Jesus Christ.
The command of love is to forgive others’ faults, abandon evil speech and actions, and pursue a good life. Through this, God’s kingdom and righteousness are established on this earth. Where there is conflict, Christians must bring reconciliation and peace.
Christians who harm others bring disgrace to the name of the God they believe in.
Circumcision is like baptism today. If a baptized Christian causes division and destroys peace, his baptism becomes meaningless.
Even if someone is not baptized, if he follows the Lord’s word, forgives, and loves others, his faith is more approved by the Lord than that of one who is baptized but disobedient.
Salvation is not received through religious rituals, but through faith that obeys the Lord’s word and repents of sin.
Religious practices such as baptism and communion are meant to remind Christians of the Lord’s word and lead them to live lives of obedience and repentance.
These practices do not save us directly; they are only aids that strengthen faith so that we may obey and repent and thus be saved.
Religious rituals are not faith. True faith that saves us is a living faith that follows the Lord’s word through repentance and obedience.
The Jews of that time perished because they abandoned lives of repentance and obedience and focused only on religious rituals. We must not believe like them.
It is not outward Jews who go to heaven, but inward Jews. This means not focusing on outward religious acts or hypocrisy, but having a transformed heart that truly lives in repentance and obedience.
Now we must stop outward circumcision and achieve circumcision of the heart.
This means removing the stubborn, selfish, and proud thoughts and habits that cover the human heart, and being transformed into a warm heart that forgives others and brings peace.
Romans 3:1–4
What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God. What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness? Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.”
When the Jews believed in God and received circumcision, what became different and better for them? It is that they were given the word of God.
When they obey God’s word, they live under His protection and love and go to heaven.
The Jews represent those who believe in Jesus today.
When we confess Jesus Christ as Savior, we become children of God, and the word of God is given to us.
When we obey the word, we live under God’s love and enter heaven.
But Christians who disobey God’s word live under curse and disease and go to hell.
Confessing Jesus once as Savior does not guarantee entrance into heaven.
Only those who obey Christ’s word and repent of disobedience become citizens of eternal heaven.
Christians who merely attend church but do not live lives of repentance and obedience live as servants of Satan and eventually go to hell; they are treated the same as unbelievers.
The disobedience of Christians does not nullify God’s faithfulness.
God will judge them according to His promise and cast them into hellfire. Only those who live lives of repentance and obedience are saved.
God’s faithfulness cannot be diminished or nullified by humans.
All humans are liars, but God alone is true.
Jesus Christ took on the same weak flesh as humans, yet He obeyed all of God’s word and died on the cross for the sins of humanity, redeeming them by His blood.
When those who are redeemed from sin repent, the salvation of the soul is accomplished.
Because of the grace of the cross, anyone who believes in Jesus and repents according to His word is forgiven and saved.
When God’s fiery judgment comes, Jesus leaves no sin to be judged in those who repent.
To avoid the fearful judgment of the law, one must believe in Jesus as Savior and truly repent.
True repentance is abandoning hatred and evil, loving God and others with a humble heart—this is the fruit of love. Those who live this way are led by the Holy Spirit and keep a living faith until they enter heaven.
Romans 3:5–8
But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing His wrath on us? Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases His glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?” Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”? Their condemnation is just.
This passage breaks the human logic that tries to justify sin.
When a person who has committed many sins repents and is forgiven, he feels the grace of the cross more deeply and gives greater thanks and glory to the Lord.
The Apostle Paul is a representative example.
Then should one intentionally commit more sin and repent? Absolutely not.
The idea that sin produces good results because it reveals God’s righteousness is completely false.
Such logic is a distortion created by those who do not want to repent—it is Satan’s reasoning.
God does not gain glory from sin and does not delight in it.
He hates sin and will surely judge those who do not repent.
“Let us do evil that good may come” is a false argument.
“It is okay to sin a little.”
“God will turn it into good anyway, so disobedience and lack of repentance are acceptable.”
These false ideas are spreading subtly in many churches. This is a very wrong and false gospel.
Such thinking must be condemned.
Those who think this way sin without burden, do not repent, and even justify sin. This directly opposes God’s will.
No sin can be justified.
Stay away from sin with all your body and mind, but when you do sin, repent immediately.
“God is love, so sin is acceptable” is false.
“Let us achieve good through evil” is a false gospel—it is human doctrine, not Scripture.
Paul once fiercely opposed the Lord, but when he realized Christ’s redeeming grace, he was deeply thankful and devoted his life to the Lord.
He did not intentionally sin to magnify grace; rather, he gave his life to avoid idolatry and impurity.
Romans 3:9–18
What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one…”
This describes the common sinful nature of all humanity.
Because Adam and Eve disobeyed, they fell, and all humanity born from them inherits sinful tendencies. There are no exceptions.
Laws and education cannot restore fallen human nature.
Strong laws may temporarily reduce crime out of fear, but they do not change the human heart. When restraint is removed, people return to their old ways.
Before God, who sees the heart, all people remain sinners.
When one believes in Jesus and repents, the Holy Spirit enters the heart and transforms the person fundamentally.
As one repents and obeys Jesus’ word, evil thoughts are restrained and good thoughts arise. This is being born again.
But one transformation does not guarantee heaven.
One must continue a life of repentance and obedience until the end.
If a person returns to worldly desires and stops repenting, he returns to his old self. Many Christians today live this way—attending church but losing fellowship with the Lord due to sin.
Those who maintain only outward religion without a true relationship with the Lord remain like unbelievers and are under Satan’s control.
Those who have abandoned repentance and obedience must return to the Lord by living according to His word.
The Lord’s command is: forgive others, abandon selfish desires, stop evil speech and actions, pursue peace and goodness, and rely on the Holy Spirit. Always acknowledge your shortcomings and repent.
Those who live this way will receive God’s mercy and enter heaven on the last day.
Romans 3:19–22
Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore, no one will be declared righteous in His sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference.
God gave the law so that humans might realize what sin is.
In the light of the law, all people are revealed as sinners—whether Jews who believe or those who do not. The wages of sin are curse, disease, and hell.
To save humanity, God Himself took on flesh and died for human sin.
Thus, the Word who created all things came into the world as Jesus and died on the cross.
Whoever believes in Jesus is redeemed from sin.
At the moment of belief, all past sins are removed.
Future sins, however, must be forgiven through repentance.
Therefore, redemption from sin and the salvation of the soul are different.
Those redeemed must live lives of repentance and obedience.
This is the faith that saves the soul.
Many confess Jesus once but continue in sin without repentance—this nullifies grace.
Human doctrines claim repentance is unnecessary, but this opposes Scripture.
Sins committed after confessing Jesus must always be repented of and cleansed by His blood.
Faith without repentance and obedience is false and cannot save the soul.
